Cookies and Lemonade

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVE!!!

That only works for Christmas? Oh... Shoot.

On the weekend, I went on a garage sale hunt looking for a shoe rack. Alas, no shoe racks were to be had. I did however find some toys for Momma Froc's work. And some Pixar movies. And some super cute little kids. I didn't buy the kids, but I DID realize how much of a softie I am.

I was surprised when I walked into this one garage to find a lady and ALL of her five little kids eagerly waiting for customers.

Blonde kid #1: Look! Now there's one... two...
Blonde kid #2: Three! Three customers mom!
Mom: Shhh!

I tried to look as interested as possible in the toddler clothes and glasses etched with horses. Then I blew it. I looked at the two littlest girls sitting at a small table by the door with a hand coloured sign that read, "Fresh Home baked cookies. $1". And then I was looking at them, and they looked at me, and my heart did that melty thing that happened all the time at practicum and... I walked out of there with a cookie.

And then I was in this other yard, and two little kids had set up a lemonade stand. (I think you can guess where this story is going.) They were getting super discouraged because none of the grown-ups wanted any lemonade! And they tried to tell their mom, but she was busy helping customers, so all they could do was wait. I vividly remember being little and wanting to help out at our garage sales, but always being brushed aside by the adults. No, this injustice would not stand! So yes, I walked up to those little people.

Me: How much is a glass of lemonade?
Little boy: fmmmphgy-five cents.
Me: forty-five cents?
Little boy: *giggles* No! TWENTY-five cents!
Me: I would like one glass please!

I went to reach for the pitcher, because it was just about the same size as this kid, but he insisted on pouring it for me. Just then his little business partner came running.

Little girl: Did she buy lemonade?!
Little boy: Yep.
Me: I did! And it was delicious lemonade! And I gave him a quarter, so I should probably give you one too!

I'm telling you, you have not seen pure excitement until you have given a little kid fifty cents. Even though as a masquerading adult I know it's probably not the most economically responsible thing to do when you're a poor student, I vowed that day that I would never pass up a lemonade stand if I could help it.  My name is Chantelle, and I support kids' entrepreneurial endeavours.
