Yesterday morning, by a series of events which can only be described as miraculous, my mother and I wound up getting tickets to go see WICKED.
Yes. THIS Wicked.
Here is the obligatory "Let's try and take a secrety-secret picture of the stage before the performance starts without the ushers noticing and confiscating my camera" picture:
I have not smiled as much this entire summer as I did yesterday night. I LOVED Wicked more than Phantom, and for me to say that is a huge deal. Phantom is my favourite musical. At least it was, until Wicked sauntered in and beat the heck out of it with a wooden club.
I could swoon over the music, or the plot, or the messages, or the costuming and staging, but I'd rather talk about Elphaba, the main character in Wicked. She's very smart and talented, but because of her green skin and temper, people are really awful to her. Then Elphaba learns that she has a talent, and when she discovers this, she believes in her potential and goals whole-heartedly, and worked hard towards them. Now, my skin isn't green, but I have never identified with a fictional character more than with Elphaba. We both have younger sisters in wheelchairs that we are expected to take care of, and we both have experienced similar trials. I liked that she was stubborn and witty, and that she knew what was right and stuck to what she believed even when she was offered power and the chance to be popular. There were parts that I would watch and basically go, "Whoa. This is my life!".
It was AMAZING. I plan to fangirl over it for the next week and a half, at least.
