History Unfolds

It's been a busy couple of days here on Earth.
Exhibit A: The Royal Wedding. No, I did not wake up in the middle of the night to watch, but I did watch it later on in the day. Especially the highlights. I adored Kate's dress. I can't even express how impressed I was that not only her dress, but also her sister's dress, had sleeves! People don't really realize that modesty does not mean you're a prude, it means you respect yourself and you want others to do the same. Hopefully, her wedding dress is the start of a change in fashion. That would sure make me happy. :)

Exhibit B: The death of Osama Bin Laden. I don't really know what to think about this one. I've never been of the same "eye for an eye" mentality that some people seem to have. I like what Martin Luther King Jr. said once:
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.
When I heard stories and saw pictures of people cheering when they heard the news of his death it kind of made me so, so sad. He was still a person, no matter what his actions were. But people can be cruel sometimes... I'm not saying that the events of 9/11 were justified or anything, or that having troops in Iraq was 100% bad, but I think maybe there could've been a different way to handle some things. And unlike so many people, I don't think the "war" is over. I think it's only the beginning. Maybe it's just a different kind of war we're going to be fighting now...

Exhibit C: Canadian Elections. Today I voted for the first time. I wasn't excited about it, and I admit, I really didn't care at first, but I'm glad that I did. It forced me to grow up a little and inform myself about what's going on. I don't always like to do that, because politics can be so confusing and frustrating and it makes people fight. Momma Froc also reminded me that voting is important because one of the main tenets of our religion (called the Articles of Faith) says "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law", and if we don't exercise our right to vote, then we're not really sustaining the law, are we? Good job election for making Chantelle leave her bubble!

So yeah. Busy times.
It's kind of cool to think that even though I'm just 18, I've already seen so much history unfold... Makes you wonder what's going to happen next doesn't it?
