My little brother is awesome.

This weekend, Benton travelled with the grade 8 band to Regina for a competition. They won silver! Yay small highschool chillun! Although I'm proud of him for doing well with the other kids, I'm more proud of him for something that he was NOT awarded for.

You see, this competition/band trip is a big deal. It's really the first big band trip for kids at the highschool, and there's lots of clinics and fun stuff. There's also a dance for ALL of the kids there. That was what worried Benton.

Growing up, we were encouraged to not attend dances until we were 14 years old. (Exceptions were family dances at wedding receptions and stuff, of which I have personally attended a  grand total of... 1.) It's not an official church rule or anything, but our parents always told us we'd be able to better appreciate them if we waited and it would keep us safe. So in turn, each of us older kids waited.  And as usual, they were right.

Benton is 13. Benton is a good kid. He wants to do the right thing. (I love that about him.) When he heard there would be a dance, he asked the teachers if he could just stay in his hotel room and not go. But the teachers said he had to be there with the other kids. So Benton went, and for the entire dance, he sat at one of the tables by himself. He was determined to stick out his promise to not go to dances until he was 14 and he refused to join his friends. Even, my mother emphasized, when he was asked to dance frequently by SEVERAL girls. (Atta be, you little stud!)

It's so awesome to watch my siblings grow up into great people. Benny Boo, even though we tease you and make up stupid nicknames for you and call you the "Spare Parts Child", I adore you. And you make me a proud big sister!
